Beginnings
The first recommendation of the 1996 Report of the Task Force on the Status of Women was: Establish the IU Indianapolis Office for Women. “We envisioned a future with a permanent and formal campus mechanism to address the status of women faculty, librarians, staff and students and a campus climate which makes IU Indianapolis an institution where women can succeed….”
Vision
We envision an energized community of faculty, staff and students pursuing opportunities for full participation, shared influence, and equity in all aspects of the work and learning environments at IU Indianapolis in order to meet the IU Indianapolis mission to advance the State of Indiana and the intellectual growth of its citizens to the highest levels nationally and internationally.
Mission
The IU Indianapolis Office for Women supports the IU Indianapolis mission to provide excellence in teaching and learning; research, scholarship and creative activity; and civic engagement by promoting and supporting an inclusive working and learning environment that benefits women and men so that all may attain their full potential and become effective citizens of their community and the world.
Goals
• Address the qualitatively different needs and interests of IU Indianapolis women faculty, staff and students;
• Empower women to attain their full potential;
• Build open and welcoming work and learning environments;
• Improve the representation and retention of women faculty and staff;
• Provide resources and education about gender issues and gender equity
• Develop and support efforts to create equal opportunities and justice for women both locally and globally
• Promote a safe and supportive climate free from harassment, discrimination and privilege based on gender
Activities
• Provide assistance and direct services to address occupational, rehabilitative, or personal concerns of women and families;
• Provide leadership and professional development training and promote leadership development opportunities to support women in reaching their full potential
• Foster a mentoring culture by developing internal mentoring programs and encouraging outside mentoring opportunities.
• Monitor campus climate and the status of women and advocate for gender and pay equity
• Develop networks of support and connection to support and advance women
• Recognize and celebrate the achievements of women on campus
• Develop informational programming
• Develop linkages to community groups for collaborations and partnership
• Sponsor and conduct research on gender and diversity issues
• Educate campus community on gender issues and promote a curriculum free from gender bias
• Promote a safe environment and support primary prevention measures for women’s safety
