Director, Department of Dietetics, 1979-1989
Arlene Wilson was a national leader in dietetics and an influential director of the IU Indianapolis dietetics program. Starting in 1961, Wilson expanded her influence in the program through a series of leadership positions including education director, assistant department director, and director of internships.
In 1979, Wilson became director of the department of dietetics. As director, Wilson created a 2-year associate degree program in hospital dietary technology. She created a master of science degree as part of the dietetics internship program. Wilson also instituted computerization innovations throughout the department.
Wilson was active in dietetics on a state-wide and national level. She was a member of the American Dietetics Association Executive Board from 1969-1974 and served terms as president of the Central Indiana Dietetics Association, Indiana Dietetics Association, and the American Dietetics Association. Wilson received many awards for her achievements, including a 1987 Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Memorial Award from the American Dietetics Association.
