Director, IU Indianapolis Libraries, 1981-1995
When Barbara Fischler became director of IU Indianapolis Libraries in 1981, she brought a multitude of experience as a librarian within the IU System to her position. From 1958-1963, she worked as an assistant reference librarian at IU Bloomington. In 1970, she took a position as circulation librarian at IU Indianapolis and also became an associate professor of the IU Indianapolis School of Library and Information Sciences. In 1981, Fischler became acting director of IU Indianapolis Libraries and,in 1982, she was named the permanent director.
As director, Fischler oversaw University Library and Herron Art Library. She was instrumental in planning the technology and design of the new University Library building, which broke ground in 1988 and opened in 1992. Fischler also served on several task forces for university development and held a seat on the faculty council.
Fischler resigned as library director in 1995 and served a term as acting director of the School of Library and Information Sciences before retiring from IU Indianapolis in 1997.
