Associate Dean, University College, 1998-2007
In 1974, Barbara Jackson, Ph.D. joined the IU Indianapolis School of Liberal Arts as its first full-time anthropology professor. She developed the new anthropology department, serving as its first chair and creating a curriculum for the anthropology major. In the late 1970s, Jackson helped found the Women's Studies Program and served as its director for several years. In 1987, Jackson became Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Liberal Arts, a position that she held for ten years. Jackson was well-known across campus and served on many university committees.
Jackson was one of the founding faculty members of University College and in 1998, she became its first Associate Dean. In this role, she worked to develop and implement programs to promote academic success among first-year students. She improved first-year seminars, developed a course in critical inquiry, and helped start both the Bepko Learning Center and the Summer Bridge Academy. She also organized the University College Faculty Fellows Program. Jackson retired in 2007.
