From 1997 to 2005, Cheryl Sullivan served as Vice Chancellor for External Affairs at IU Indianapolis. As Vice Chancellor, she was responsible for improving IU Indianapolis's image in the community and acting as a liaison between IU Indianapolis and local businesses, government agencies, and members of the general public. This included marketing, general communications, and fund raising.
In 1998, Sullivan led IU Indianapolis's campaign to revamp its athletics program. She led a search for a new name and logo for IU Indianapolis's athletics teams and oversaw the completion of an NCAA Self Study to gain certification for a Division 1 Athletics Program. Sullivan also led IU Indianapolis's Reputation Management Campaign in the early 2000s.
Sullivan came to IU Indianapolis after spending years in state government and took a leave of absence from 2003 to 2004 to head the Family and Social Services Administration of the State of Indiana. She left IU Indianapolis in 2005 after being named policy director for US Senator Evan Bayh.
