Retired Professor of Nursing
As a professor of nursing and fourth Dean of the School of Nursing,Constance Baker, Ph.D., RN was instrumental in the development of nursing curriculum. She redesigned the master of nursing curriculum along with Mary Fisher and initiated planning for the PhD program in nursing.
Baker's interest in curriculum development led her to become a consultant with foreign universities who wanted to establish PhD programs. She helped establish programs in such countries as the Philippines, South Africa, and Mexico. From 1999-2002, Baker designed the first doctoral nursing program in Mexico for the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon. Her efforts resulted in a lasting partnership between IU and Universidad Autonoma.
In 2003,Baker was chosen as Director of Graduate Studies for the Center on Philanthropy. Her role was to guide the implementation of a new interdisciplinary PhD program in Philanthropic Studies. In 2003, she also gifted the funds to create the Baker-Ort Chair in International Healthcare Philanthropy at IU Indianapolis. Baker retired c. 2008.
