Assistant Professor of Music
As an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of the IU Indianapolis Music Academy, E.J. Choe helped students to excel in mastering vocals and learning to play instruments. Choe is an accomplished pianist, and performed her first televised concert in her native Korea at age 6. She continues to travel to Korea to give concerts and teach master classes. During her tenure at IU Indianapolis, Choe received two grants from the Office of International Affairs to recruit Korean students to IU Indianapolis.
As the director of the IU Indianapolis Music Academy, Choe oversaw 400 currently enrolled students from the Indianapolis community. The Music Academy began in 1996 as an outreach program to help community members study music, and offers programs for all age groups. Choe also offered music outreach programming in conjunction with several local organizations, including St. Richards Episcopal School, IU Indianapolis Center for Young Children, Girls Inc., and Indiana Association of Home Educators.
Besides teaching piano, Choe has worked as a vocal coach. She once served as the opera coach and music director for the Aspen Music Festival Opera Center. She has also coached at the Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy; Indiana University Opera Center; and DePauw University. Choe has worked with many famous opera singers, including Martina Arroyo, James King, Giorgio Tozzi, Roy Samuelsen, and Virginia Zeani.
Choe served as the Education Chair for the Young Musicians Contest of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Association, Vice President of the Indiana State Music Federation, and Vice Chair of the Central Great Lake Regional Chapter for National Guild Community Schools of the Arts. She is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences on the topics of Community Outreach and Music Technology. During her tenure at IU Indianapolis, Choe worked to bring the 2012 conferences of the Indiana State Music Federation State Play-offs and Central Great Lake Regional Chapter Meeting to IU Indianapolis. Choe left IU Indianapolis in 2016 to become Director for Accreditation at New Mexico Highlands University.
