Director, IU Indianapolis RISE program, 2014-Present
Jennifer Thorington Springer, Ph.D. directs IU Indianapolis’s RISE Program, aimed at adding a component of learning through experience to the baccalaureate degree program. Undergraduate students complete a minimum of 2 experiences from 4 fields of hands-on learning: research, international experience, service learning, and experiential learning. Thorington Springer leads efforts at strategic planning for the campus’s RISE program. Her duties include communication and program assessment. She also collaborates with faculty to develop curricula appropriate for credit under the RISE program.
In addition to her work for the RISE initiative, Thorington Springer is an Associate Professor of English and Associate Chair of the Department of English. She also teaches courses as an adjunct for Women’s Studies and Africana Studies. She is an affiliate with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at IU Bloomington.
Thorington Springer’s work on behalf of students at IU Indianapolis has been recognized with many institutional awards, including the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Teaching, the Joseph T. Taylor Diversity Award for Excellence in Diversity, an IU Indianapolis Student Council Outstanding Mentor/Motivator Award, the IU Indianapolis Outstanding Woman Leader Award, and four Trustees Teaching Awards.
