Professor of Surgery, 1984-2015
Karen West, M.D. specializes in pediatric surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She also practices medicine at Riley Hospital for Children. West has been a member of the faculty of the School of Medicine since 1984.
West serves the School of Medicine and IU Indianapolis as a member of numerous committees. She has served on search and screen committees, scholarship committees, the IU Indianapolis Faculty Council, and the University Council. West also served a term as president of the Faculty Council. In 2006, she became the inaugural chair of the Women's Advisory Council at the School of Medicine. West is currently co-chair of two important committees at the School of Medicine - the Rural Medicine Program and the Admissions Committee. She also serves as a medical student advisor.
Early in her career, West built a program for an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation service at Riley Hospital for Children. This technology helps children with respiratory failure. West has served as the program's surgical director since the 1980s. She is also the surgical director of the Newborn ICU unit at Riley Hospital.
West has been nominated for three Trustee Teaching Awards. She was chosen as the 2004 Indianapolis Business Journal Physician Medical Hero. She was awarded a 2010 Outstanding Woman Faculty Member award by the IU Indianapolis Office for Women.
