Lillian Mueller, M.D.
First Female Physician, Methodist Hospital
Dr. Mueller was the first female physician at Methodist Hospital, an IU Affiliate. She joined the hospital's medical staff in 1910 as an anesthesiologist, and served in this position until 1919. Mueller introduced the use of gas anesthesia to the hospital.
Mueller was a 1909 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine. She later went on to become the first secretary of the Section on Anesthesia of the Indiana State Medical Association (1934). From 1940-1955 she served as Head of Anesthesiology for City Hospital (Indianapolis).
