Director, IU Indianapolis School of Continuing Education, 1973-1983
For Marjorie Stonehill, assisting adults with continuing their education was a passion. When she joined the faculty at IU Indianapolis in 1970 as Coordinator of Continuing Education, Stonehill was charged with developing topics for noncredit seminars. By 1973, she had become Director of IU Indianapolis's School of Continuing Education, and served in this capacity for 10 years.
As director, Stonehill had the opportunity to shape the direction of activities within the school, and within a year, she took advantage of this opportunity by successfully creating a proposal to open a separate center dedicated to women. The IU Indianapolis Center for Women, one of the first fully developed centers for women's continuing education in the state, opened in January 1975 in a building on 38th St. Stonehill hired Maureen Prevost to direct the center's daily activities, and Stonehill continued to oversee the overall activities at the center, which offered non-degree classes, testing, resume preparation, workshops, seminars, counseling, and job placement.
In 1976, Stonehill was promoted to Assistant Dean of the Indiana University system-wide School of Continuing Studies. She continued to fulfill her daily tasks as Director of IU Indianapolis Continuing Studies. She was later promoted to Associate Dean. Stonehill retired in 1983. She died on 22 January 2007.
