Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs, Indiana University School of Medicine
Mary Austrom, Ph.D. is a passionate researcher and educator in the field of Alzheimer disease care. Her efforts have resulted in non-pharmacological interventions for patients and families, including stress reduction for caregivers and improvements in patient care.
Austrom is a member of the graduate faculty at the School of Medicine, an adjunct professor in the School of Nursing, and chairs a department committee on faculty development and diversity. She is an affiliated scientist at the IU Center for Aging Research. In addition, Austrom is co-investigator of the Education and Information Transfer Core for the Indiana Alzheimer Disease Center. She focuses on development and delivery of educational programming about Alzheimer disease. Her outreach efforts include clinical professionals, scientists, patients, and the general public.
In July 2014, Austrom was appointed to the position of Associate Dean of Diversity Affairs. In this role, she is working with a team of associate deans to integrate diversity efforts across the School of Medicine campus, including clinical services, teaching, research, and bedside care. She is also working with the School of Medicine Diversity Council to create a new institutional definition of diversity in preparation for the 2016 Liaison Committee on Medical Education visit to the IU School of Medicine.
