Mary Harter Mitchell,J.D. taught law courses at Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis for over 25 years. She taught courses in contract law, elder law, religion and law, prison law, and women and the law. Mitchell also helped to design the coursework for the prison law classes. She single-handedly organized the school's course, Women and the Law. The Women and the Law course was widely acclaimed, and even caught the attention of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who visited the class in 2007.
Mitchell was loved by both students and faculty and was often credited with fostering a sense of community at the school. She served on many of the law school's committees and served as a faculty advisor for five student organizations.She was a 2003 recipient of an IU Trustees teaching award.
In addition to teaching law courses, Mitchell was a published poet and peace activist. She volunteered at the Peace House in Indianapolis. She also organized numerous book drives to help women in prison. Mitchell died in November 2009. She was awarded a posthumous award for Inspirational Woman of 2010 by the IU Indianapolis Office for Women.
