Nan Bohan has been a long-time champion of IU Indianapolis's civic engagement mission. Duringher nineteen years as Administrative Assistant to the Executive Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties, Bohan challenged administrators, faculty, and students to strengthen their commitment to community service. She has offered support to the Center for Service and Learning, the Center on Philanthropy, and International Affairs. She also worked with the Department of Athletics to create community involvement initiatives for student athletes. Bohan is a long-time volunteer at IU Indianapolis campus events for United Way, Martin Luther King Day of Service, and the WESCO Partnership. Over the years, Bohan has been a major supporter of IU Indianapolis's Senior Academy for retired staff members, working to keep the program alive.
Having been the face of IU Indianapolis community service for so many years, it was only logical that four years ago Bohan was tapped to become the Assistant Director for the Office of Internal Community Development, where she now focuses her full attention on developing community service initiatives and improving IU Indianapolis's relationships with the Indianapolis community. Bohan was the first recipient of IU Indianapolis's Nan Bohan Award for Staff Community Engagement, an annual campus-wide award for staff civic engagement that was named in her honor. Retired Dean of the Faculties and Executive Vice Chancellor William Plater has described her as "legendary for her hospitality on behalf of IU Indianapolis."
