President and CEO of Riley Hospital for Children, 2004-2009
Ora Pescovitz, M.D. is a leader in research and administration within the field of medicine. She began her career at the Indiana University School of Medicine as a professor of pediatrics and cellular and integrative physiology, but soon expanded her role into administrative functions. In 1990, she became Director of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology for the medical school and Riley Hospital for Children.
In 2000, Pescovitz became Executive Associate Dean of Research Affairs for the medical school. As an associate dean, she oversaw the school's expansion of research programs, increased funding for biomedical research, and obtained millions of dollars in grants and contracts. She also oversaw the construction of new research space and the Simon Family Tower. Pescovitz was a leader in the establishment of the Indiana Genomics Initiative, a project which laid the research foundation for Indiana's BioCrossroads economic initiative.
In 2004, Pescovitz became President and CEO of Riley Hospital for Children. She helped the hospital increase its national reputation and oversaw new construction. She also retained her position as Associate Dean, contributing to the continued development of research at the university.
Despite her busy schedule as a high-profile administrator at the School of Medicine and Riley Hospital, Pescovitz retains a busy pace as a researcher, publishing a prolific amount of scientific articles. She is a former president of the Society for Pediatric Research and the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society.
In April 2009, Pescovitz was named one of the "Top 25 Women in Healthcare" by Modern Healthcare Magazine. She left IU Indianapolis in May 2009 to become Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs at University of Michigan and CEO of University of Michigan Health Systems.
