Associate Professor of Philosophy, 2005-2012
Peg Zeglin Brand, Ph.D.is the former "first spouse" of Indiana University during the presidential tenure of her husband, Myles Brand (1994-2002). She is a pioneer in the fields of feminist aesthetics and ethics and taught courses at Indiana University Bloomington from 1994 until 2005. She joined the faculty of the departments of Philosophy and Women's Studies at IU Indianapolis in 2005.
At Indiana University Bloomington, Brand organized the Indiana University Intercampus Undergraduate Women and Gender Studies Conference, an annual conference that brings together feminist scholars at all IU campuses to share their ideas and research. She continues to serve as chair of this conference. She was also a founding member of the Colloquium for Women, a biennial program of Indiana University Bloomington focusing on women and philanthropy. The colloquium is said to be responsible for both an upsurge in female donors to the University and an increase in outreach towards potential female donors.
Brand's presence at IU Indianapolis from 2005-2012 filled a curriculum gap; feminist philosophy had not been taught in many years. She developed new curriculum on the subject. Brand also became the advisor for the Alliance for Gender Awareness. She served on several campus committees, including the faculty handbook committee and the School of Liberal Arts graduate curriculum committee. Brand also pursued her artwork in the Stutz Building in Indianapolis. She was the Indiana representative for the Feminist Art Project at Rutgers University and contributed Indiana updates on feminist art to the project.
Brand is the author of Beauty Matters (Indiana University Press, 2000) and Beauty Revisited(Indiana University Press, 2011). She was nominated for a 2010 Torchbearer Award. Brand left IU Indianapolis in 2012 to take a position at the University of Oregon.
