Director, Art Education, Herron School of Art and Design, 1970-1972
Phyllis Danielson, Ph.D. came to IU Indianapolis in 1970 to take a position as the first director of art education at the Herron School of Art and Design. She organized the new department, charged with instructing art students on how to teach art to children. In the summer of 1972, Danielson began a community outreach program to bring free art classes to the children of Indianapolis. From 1972-1975, she served as chair of art studies.
While at IU Indianapolis, Danielson joined several influential committees including long-range planning and salary equalization. She also became secretary of the Faculty Council. In 1975, shortly before her departure from IU Indianapolis, Danielson organized a committee to procure a piece of public art for the courtyard near University Library. The committee commissioned David von Schlegell of Yale University to create the sculpture, which he installed in 1980.
In 1975, Danielson left IU Indianapolis to become president of the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI. She is retired.
