Chancellor's Professor Emeritus of Anthropology
As the first Associate Vice Chancellor of International Affairs at IU Indianapolis, Susan Sutton spent her days developing strategic partnerships with foreign universities, overseeing international students and study abroad activities, and coordinating visits from international scholars. Under Sutton's guidance, the university entered several important partnerships with foreign universities, including a public health partnership with Autonomous University in Mexico and the opening of a Confucius Institute at IU Indianapolis.
In the Spring of 2009, IU Indianapolis announced a new engineering partnership with the University of Tehran, becoming one of only two universities in the United States to win approval from the United States Department of State to enter a partnership with an Iranian University. Under Sutton's guidance, IU Indianapolis won the Heiskell International Education Award for International Partnerships in 2009. Sutton's office was also responsible for internationalizing the undergraduate curriculum at IU Indianapolis.
Sutton's career at IU Indianapolis began in 1978 when she arrived as an assistant professor of anthropology. She eventually rose through the ranks of professors, becoming a full professor in 1998. She specialized in Greek anthropology. In 2003, Sutton was named a Chancellor's Professor of Anthropology.
Sutton retired in 2010 and works as the Senior Advisor for Internationalization at Bryn Mawr College. In 2013, the Office of International Affairs presented the first Susan Buck Sutton award to staff members who have made significant contributions to the study abroad program at IU Indianapolis.
