Associate Director of Population Science Research, IU Simon Cancer Center
When Victoria Champion, DNS, RN, FAAN began her career in nursing at IU Indianapolis in 1981, few nurses were promoting their own research agendas. That didn't stop Champion from pursuing research in behavioral oncology and quickly becoming a highly regarded expert. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for over twenty years and she is widely published. Champion was also instrumental in creating the Behavioral Cooperative Oncology Group between Indiana University and several other research-based universities in order to further advance behavioral oncology through collaborative efforts.
As an administrator, Champion has been successful in promoting the development of IU's cancer facilities. She led the creation of the IU Simon Cancer Center and directs its Cancer Control Program. In 2011, Champion was named Associate Director of Population Science Research for the IU Simon Cancer Center. In this role, she provides scientific and administrative oversight to the center's population science research programs and is in charge of all community engagement programs.
Champion is a highly regarded mentor for PhD students pursuing research careers. During her years as Associate Dean for Research, she has encouraged both junior faculty and PhD students to pursue excellence in research, as she herself has done. Champion is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a member of the Indiana Executive Board for Tobacco. She is a past member of the National Cancer Advisory Board. Her awards include a Distinguished Senior Research Award (1994) from the Midwest Nursing Research Society, a Distinguished Research Award from the Oncology Nursing Society (2001), and a Pathfinder Award from the National Institute for Nursing Research (2004).
