The Indiana University School of Medicine recognizes the need to recruit, retain, and advance the best faculty to achieve its strategic goals and to accomplish our tripartite mission. The IUSM Women's Advisory Council, established in 2006, provides a critical advisory role for the School's efforts to create a culture where we can recruit and retain the best talent, and where all members of the IUSM community can thrive.
The Inaugural Chair of the Women's Advisory Council was Karen West, MD who served from 2006 to 2007. Drs. Susan Cordes and Mary Dankoski are the current co-chairs, and as of 2009/2010, the Council has grown to 39 appointed members.
Priorities of the Council include:
a) institutional barriers that disproportionately affect women (such as flexibility in career paths and part-time faculty issues)
b) advancement and mentoring
c) leadership training opportunities
d) building high-impact communication strategies for the Council.
In November 2009, the IUSM Women's Advisory Council and Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development received prestigious national recognition as the recipients of the Association of American Medical Colleges Women in Medicine and Science Organizational Leadership Award. This national award is given annually to organizations that show commitment to, and success in, advancing women in medicine and science.
