“Celebrating 50 Years of Title IX” Exhibit in Cultural Arts Gallery
Fifty years ago, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 changed higher education forever with these 37 words. “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Throughout March 2023, a visual representation of its impact on US higher education and IUPUI was sponsored by the Office for Women at the Cultural Arts Gallery in the Campus Center with funding support from the Vice Chancellor for DEI.
Title IX is the federal law that protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Since being enacted in 1972 it has had a profound impact on access to educational programs and opportunities for women and LGBTI+ communities.
The exhibit included representations of various aspects of the story of Title IX: Title IX Origins, Champions of Title IX, Timeline for the Nation and IUPUI, Impact on Professional Education, 50 years of progress at IUPUI, Athletics, Today’s Issues, and Complaint Procedures.
