What
The Advancing Women Mentoring Program is designed to empower individuals toward academic, personal, and professional success by engaging participants in authentic mentoring partnerships. Students have the opportunity to be mentored throughout the academic year by IU Indianapolis faculty and staff. Specifically, the program highlights topics pertaining to the advancement of women both in the university and the workplace. This program is open to all students, faculty, and staff with an interest in this subject. About 30 teams of mentor/mentees are paired each year.
Statement of Inclusion
Since 2011, the Advancing Women Mentoring Program has been dedicated to our goals of providing authentic relationships, campus resources, and career and academic advice. Anyone with an interest in the subject of “advancing women” is welcome to participate in the program regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status. We are dedicated to making our program an enriching space for all of those who participate.
How
Mentors from the faculty and staff are recruited and their completed applications made available to mentee applicants. Students applying for the program indicate their particular needs for mentoring and read about the mentors online and indicate their top 5 preferences on their application. Mentor/Mentee teams are matched by staff and then introduced at an opening event.
Workshops
Throughout the year special workshops and events are scheduled for the participants. They are also encouraged to attend programming of the Office for Women. The workshops focus on professional and career development needs and issues impacting the success of women in the workforce.
